Chaos Helbrute Paint Guide

In this Painting guide I am going to show you, step-by-step, how I painted the Chaos Helbrute from the Dark Vengeance box set. the scheme that I chose fits in with the rest of my Chaos Space Marine force and has nods to the traitor Dark Angels and the Alpha Legion. The first step is to prep and glue your model. I left the base loose on my model because i wanted to be able to get my brush into the underside of the miniature.

Step 2:

Undercoat the miniature with a good even coat of Abaddon Black, I used paint and brush rather than spraypaint because I wanted to give my miniature an even surface to paint over.

Step 3:

Paint Cadian Fleshtone onto all skin areas and the fleshy tubes. This may take two or three layers before you get a good even coverage.

Step 4:

Give the previously painted fleshy parts a heavy drybrush of Kislev Flesh but avoid the deeper parts that you will want to be a darker shade.

Step 5:

Paint Tallarn Sand onto the spine, the vents, the toenails, the horns and some of the tubes. Get a good even coverage but leave the gaps in the vents black to give the illusion of holes.

Step 6:

Give a heavy drybrush of Ushabti Bone onto all the areas that were painted with Tallarn Sand

Step 7;

All of the above painted parts should now get a couple of washes of Agrax Earthshade. This is the most important step so far, using a wash makes your model look a thousand times better.

Step 8:

Paint all armour parts, not including the ridging a solid coating of Caliban Green

Step 9:

Paint the edging with Warplock Bronze being very careful as you do and making sure you get to all the sides.

Step 10:

Paint Runefang Steel onto the pistons and the eye symbols. Give the previously painted Warplock Bronze a heavy drybrush of Runefang Steel. Finally also give the exposed parts of the pipes a drybrush being careful not to catch the skin areas.

Step 11:

Paint a thin line of Abaddon Black in the eyes motif's, these represent the pupils. I chose to do a line rather than a dot so it looks less human and more feral.

Step 12:

Once this has dried give all the eyes a thin layer of Waystone Green. This really shows up fantastically with a light silver background. For a stronger green colour give a second coating of Waystone Green.

Step 13:

Give a very light drybrush of Ushabti Bone to the extreme edges of the spine, horns and the face.

Step 14:

Paint the Power Fist a solid coating of Altdorf Guard Blue

Step 15:

Be extra careful when painting these steps for the face because one mistake could lead to disaster! Put a small dot of Emperors Children Pink on the tip of the tongue and a couple of dots of Ceramite White onto the teeth. I gave my miniatures eyes a glowing effect to represent the power within the beast. To do this I painted Temple Guard Blue onto the eyes and slightly over the edges and followed this up with a slight drybrush of Ceramite White.

Step 16:

Wash the Power Fist with a heavy dose of Drakenhof Nightshade and Drybrush the whole Fist with Temple Guard Blue.

Step 17:

Paint the claw tips and the edging of the Power Fist with Runefang Steel then lightly drybrush the rest of Power Fist with the same silver. Paint the teeth on the underside of the claw with Ushabti Bone and then drybrush with Ceramite White.

Base:

I based the Helbrute in the same way as the rest of my chaos force. The top of the base was painted in Ceramite White and the sides in Tallarn Sand. Afterwards I will add snow effect onto the white with the White acting as depth for the snow. The stone was painted in the same way as our ruins of Osgiliath set.
