League of LOTR

The League of LOTR is exactly what you think. This is a league style tournament featuring 6 different teams. Each team is made up of 500 points worth of heroes and warriors from a particular faction. Each squad has to consist of at least one hero and can have no more than 33% of the models armed with ranged weapons. The match ups for each round will be drawn randomly so each list needs to be well rounded and should not be tailored to face a particular enemy.

There will be 5 rounds of matches so each team will get to face each other in a different homemade scenario. Each scenario will have a victory point system and this will determine the score that will be put into the League which will in turn determine the ranking order. Having more victory points than your opponent will get you a 1-0 victory. Having twice as many victory points will get you a 2-0 victory, Having 3 times as many will get you a 3-0 victory etc. If any match is a draw then the result goes in as 0-0

For this tournament we will using the rules and points values from this (our favourite) LOTR rule book.

One of our first tournaments that we produced as Cob Wargaming was the Champions League of LOTR. 64 different heroes and warriors took part, only one could be victorious! Check it out here!

The Teams

Gondor Giants

105 - Boromir
75 - Faramir with Heavy Armour
55 - Captain of Minas Tirith with Shield
32 - Warrior of Minas Tirith with Banner
88 - 11 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shields
81 - 9 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shields and Spears
32 - 4 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Bows
32 - 4 Rangers of Gondor
- 500

Analysis
The Giants have two major strengths. The first is that they have 11 Might points which puts them miles ahead of all the other teams. The other is their high Defence value which for the majority of Warriors is 6 and for Faramir and the Captain it is 7. However a downfall for this side is that in selecting a solid group of foot soldiers they have missed out on some other options such as rock hard cavalry, the Banner of Minas Tirith and of course Aragorn!

Mordor Maulers

140 - Gothmog with Shield
50 - Grishnakh with Shield
100 - Mordor Troll
65 - 5 Warg Riders with Shields
30 - 1 Orc with Banner
48 - 8 Orcs with Shields
48 - 8 Orcs with Spears
18 - 3 Orcs with Two-handed Weapons
- 499

Analysis
The Maulers are a varied force that have clearly tried to utilise some of everything in their arsenal. The only major thing that they have missed out on is the deadly effects of the Ringwraiths however the sheer physical presence of a Mordor Troll more than makes up for this! Gothmog's Master of Battle special rule should also be a massive thorn in the side of his enemy's.

Rohan Royals
75 - Theoden with Heavy Armour and Shield
95 - Eomer with Shield, Horse and Throwing Spears
50 - Gamling
150 - 10 Riders of Rohan with Throwing Spears
117 - 17 Warriors of Rohan with Shields
10 - 1 Rohan Royal Guard
- 499

Analysis
The Royals are a diverse team, a strong mixture of cavalry and foot soldiers. Cavalry can capture objectives quickly and if they can get there then the foot soldiers can back them up. However to use Cavalry effectively in LOTR you need to win Priority at the right time and this could quickly sap the Might points of the Heroes. None of the Heroes are known for being tough guys but they can still cut through a group of warriors if they receive the right support.

Isenguard Oracles
60 - Lurtz
60 - Uruk-hai Captain with Heavy Armour and a Shield
75 - 5 Uruk-hai Berserkers
99 - 9 Uruk-hai with Crossbows
100 - 10 Uruk-hai with Shields
100 - 10 Uruk-hai with Pikes
6 - 1 Wildman of Dunland with a Two-handed Weapon
- 500

Analysis
The Oracles are literally a strong team, Lurtz and the Captain are both Strength 5 and nearly all of their warriors are Strength 4, throw in some Strength 4 crossbows and some Attacks 2 Berserkers and you have a deadly combination. Their weakness will lie in the lack of manouvrebility, if they want to excell and use their pikes to gain an advantage then they need to stay in formation which will slow them down.

Rivendell Raiders
170 - Elrond
80 - Elf Captain with Heavy Armour and a Shield
40 - Elf Warrior with Banner, Elven Blade and Heavy Armour
72 - 6 Elf Warriors with Heavy Armour, Elven Bows and Elven Blades
120 - 12 Elf Warriors with Heavy Armour and Elven Blades
18 2 Wood Elves with Armour and Elven Blades
- 500

Analysis
The Raiders will have a Fight Value advantage over most their opponents and some very accurate archers will no doubt cause some damage, their obvious weakness though is that their high points cost means they will be outnumbered by most other forces. Elrond is a powerful warrior with a high defence (7) and 3 re-rollable points of Fate to use, the ability to use magic is especially useful and so is his ability to cause Terror to all evil creatures.

Moria Heat
40 - Goblin Captain with Shield
240 - 3 Cave Trolls
70 - 14 Goblins with Orc Bows
75 - 15 Goblins with Shields
75 - 15 Goblins with Spears
- 500

Analysis
Moria Heat have clearly chosen the cheapest hero so they can squeeze in 3 Cave Trolls, which is a deadly combination for anyone to face. Alongside them sits a cool 44 Goblins which is more than enough to swarm any defence or objectives that they might have to claim. Moria Heat's major weakness will be their lack of Might Points, not being able to dictate the flow of the game through Heroic moves and the such could end up costing them dear!

Well there we go, 6 teams of the finest that Middle Earth has to offer, ready to battle. The scenarios we have created will hopefully test each team to the limit before we find out who is the greatest!
